Smart thermostats are a great way to ensure that you’re not using your heating when you don’t need to be, as they allow you to set a target temperature and schedule your heating. However, many people don’t know the correct way to use them to get the most benefit.
When it comes to smart thermostats, positioning is key! They measure the air temperature of the room they are in, so if yours is placed in a draughty hallway, it might leave the heating on long after the house's main rooms are already very warm. Similarly, if yours is placed in the kitchen, it might turn the heating off too soon once the room has warmed up from cooking.
We recommend placing your smart thermostat in a room you frequent, like the living room, to ensure that you’re getting the most from it! You can also install thermostatic valves on your radiators if they don’t already have them, as they allow you to control individual rooms. Depending on your preference, you might want to leave a room a little colder or warmer!
You might not think about it, but having your system professionally cleaned can make a huge difference in how energy-efficient it is and drastically reduce your heating bills.
If your system is sludged up, it has to work harder to heat your home, which can reduce its efficiency by as much as 40% and have serious implications for the health of your boiler!
One way to easily tell if your system needs a flush is to feel your radiators. If they are hot at the top but cold at the bottom, or they take an age to heat up, it could be a sign that they have become clogged up, forcing your boiler to work much harder.
If that blockage continues to build up and reaches the heat exchanger in your boiler, it’ll be time to say goodbye to it!
If your boiler is over 14 years old and you’re finding it’s costing you every year to repair and service it, it might be time to replace it.
It’s no secret that a new boiler can cost upwards of £2000, but it’s a real investment when you get down to the details.
Firstly, most new boilers come with 7-12 year manufacturer guarantees as standard, which means you no longer need to worry about spending money for repairs. As well as this, a modern boiler can help to save you around 30% on your energy bills, simply because they are much more efficient.
When you consider this, you’ll actually be recouping the costs of the new boiler in 3-4 years, and enjoying the benefits for much longer!
