What is a condensing boiler?

How does a condensing boiler work?

A condensing boiler captures this waste heat by passing the gases through a secondary heat exchanger, extracting extra energy and using it to preheat the water returning from your central heating system.

Is a condensing boiler the same as a combi boiler?

Not quite. A combi boiler is a type of boiler that provides both hot water and heating without the need for a hot water tank or hot water cylinder. Many combi boilers are condensing, but not all condensing boilers are combi.

Combi: Compact, delivers hot water on demand

System: Works with a hot water cylinder, but no cold water tank

Regular (or traditional): Requires both a cold water tank and a hot water cylinder

Is boiler condensate harmful?

No, boiler condensate is not harmful. It’s a mildly acidic liquid (similar to vinegar) that results from the condensation of flue gases. It’s safely discharged into your household waste water system, typically via a condensate pipe leading to a drain or into a small, purpose built soakaway.

The only issue to watch for is if the condensate pipe freezes in winter, which can cause your boiler to shut down. This is why KD Jones installs condensate pipes with proper sizing or internal routing when possible, especially during cold-weather jobs.

What comes out of a condensing boiler flue?

You’ll usually see a visible white plume (steam) coming from a condensing boiler flue. This is simply water vapour, a by-product of the efficient heat recovery process.

It’s completely normal and harmless. However, flue placement matters. Regulations require that the flue must be correctly positioned on an external wall, away from windows, air vents, or public walkways to avoid nuisance or safety issues.
